Dissertation Year Fellowship

Dissertation Year Fellowship

I am pleased to inform you that the Graduate School is now inviting nominations from Faculties for the newly established Dissertation Year Fellowship (Fellowship) starting from September 2022.

2. The Fellowship is a prestigious programme to enable selected outstanding PhD students, after thesis submission and examination, to pursue an additional year of training at the University as a full-time PhD student to bring his/her doctoral research to a higher level before graduation. The Fellowship allows more time for the students to work on his/her research and improve publication, and helps students to find better job after graduation. Fellowship holders will graduate from the University upon completion of the Fellowship. Participation in the Fellowship is entirely optional and will not affect the graduation time and/or RPg quota allocation of Faculties.

3. Outstanding full-time PhD students who have submitted a thesis for examination and rated by the Thesis Examining Committee as “outstanding (top 5%)” or “excellent (top 10%)” may be nominated by his/her primary supervisor to be considered for the Fellowship. Each fellowship holder will receive (a) a Postgraduate Scholarships (PGS) equivalent to the HKU Presidential PhD Scholarship (viz. $27,100 per month for 2022/23) for up to 12 months; (b) conference support for up to $13,500 per year; and (c) a waiver of the continuation fee during the fellowship period. For 2022/23, the funding of the Fellowship will be from the University central and no matching fund from PI/Department/Faculty is required.

4. Nominations are accepted all year round. Supervisors should discuss with the student concerned about the Fellowship opportunity during the final year.  With mutual consent, the nomination should be made by the primary supervisor immediately after oral examination by completing a prescribed nomination form for submission to the Graduate School.  The Graduate School will make a decision within one month upon receiving the completed nomination.  Please refer to the Graduate School homepage for the operational guidelines and nomination form of the Fellowship.

5. A briefing session will be held on September 5, 2022 (Monday) at 4:30 pm – 5:30 pm via Zoom to introduce the Fellowship to RPg students and supervisors. Students and staff who would like to attend the briefing session are invited to register via the following link:
