Dialogues between Veteran and Aspiring Researchers
The Graduate School is pleased to offer opportunities for informal interactions between postgraduate students and visiting professors. Through these exchanges, prominent researchers will share their immense experience and insights in becoming successful academics and beyond, and students are encouraged to ask questions about how to be better prepared for a career in academia or an alternative academic path.
Here is the fourth sharing session in the Dialogues Series:
Professor Timothy Oakes
Director, Center for Asian Studies
Professor of Geography
University of Colorado
Visiting Professor, Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences, HKU

As the director of a major Asian area studies center in the United States, Professor Oakes will discuss both the changing nature of area studies in academia, and the ongoing importance of area studies perspectives and approaches to one’s personal academic career path. As academic fields become increasingly narrow and specialized, the area studies approach provides an important opportunity for scholars to give their work broader relevance both within and beyond the academy.
